The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra ranks among the finest in the world. Founded in 1951 the orchestra is drenched in tradition having performed over 6,000 concerts, made 300 recordings and worked with a stellar line-up of conductors including Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Charles Munch, Krzysztof Penderecki, Mariss Jansons and Igor Stravinsky (when he visited Moscow in 1962).
Under veteran Music Director Yuri Simonov we can expect intensely faithful interpretations of this all-Russian programme of extracts from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet. The exceptionally gifted pianist Freddy Kempf , is the star soloist for the much-loved Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2, a fiendishly difficult yet utterly beautiful concerto.
Kempf has built a unique reputation as an explosive and physical performer not afraid to take risks as well as a serious, sensitive and profoundly musical artist, making him the ideal choice as soloist for this concert.
